New Pennsylvania Law to Protect Survivors of Domestic Violence and Their Pets

April 2025

Act 146: Protecting Families and Pets in Crisis aims to help domestic abuse survivors leave dangerous situations with their entire families, including their pets. Act 146 extends the provisions of Protection from Abuse (PFA) Orders to explicitly include companion animals by expanding protection through temporary ownership and refrains, establishing legal consequences for violating a PFA, and empowering survivors.

With this new law, domestic violence survivors and advocates will have a new tool to keep both people and animals safe.

If you want to learn more about the law, Crisis Center North, in collaboration with the Keystone Link, hosted a 90 minute webinar about the implications of Act 146 for service providers. Watch here or visit CrisisCenterNorth.org
